Julian Alps Trek
Hut to Hut Hiking in the heart of Triglav National Park
with Paula from @pj_hikes
Meet Paula - (@pj-hikes)
Paula is a Scottish mountain lover through and through — a hiker, camper, and all-round outdoor soul who’s most at home under canvas, parked beside a loch, or halfway up a misty Munro. Currently part way through her challenge to summit all 282 Munros, she shares her adventures with a growing community who come for the views but stay for her four-legged hiking companion, Nanuk, the golden retriever with a fanbase of his own.
From solo summit camps to wild weekend escapes in her trusty roof tent, Paula captures the raw beauty and simplicity of life outdoors. When she’s not chasing cairns or clouds in the Highlands, she’s inspiring others to find their own wild moments through her honest storytelling and stunning photography.
In 2025, Paula led a group with Lagom Escapes through the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees on the Carros de Foc — and now, she’s setting her sights east. With a newfound love for hut-to-hut challenges, she’ll be guiding her next group through the Julian Alps in Slovenia, sharing that same mix of grit, warmth, and humour that makes every adventure with her unforgettable.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Venice – Transfer to Radovljica
We’ll meet you at Venice Airport and drive you to Radovljica, a charming medieval town with views of the Julian Alps — the perfect spot to relax before your trek begins.
Day 2
Stara Fužina - Vogel summit (1922m) - Koca na Planini Razor
Distance: 7 km | Ascent: +498m | Descent: -705m
After breakfast we transfer by bus to Stara Fužina, where a cable car carries us high above Lake Bohinj to the Vogel ski station. From here our trek begins in dramatic fashion, with an ascent to the summit of Vogel (1922m). The ridgeline offers spectacular views across Triglav National Park, with the glittering lake far below and the high peaks of the Julian Alps stretching into the distance. We follow the ridge westwards, enjoying a true alpine atmosphere, before descending to spend the night at the welcoming Koča na Planini Razor hut.
Day 3
Koca nsa Planini Razor - Komna Plateau - Dom na Komni (1,520 m)
Distance: 9km | Ascent: +747m | Descent: -558m
Leaving Koča na Planini Razor hut, we set out along rugged alpine pastures and rocky paths with sweeping views across Triglav National Park. The trail weaves beneath dramatic limestone peaks, gradually climbing before contouring towards the Komna plateau. This stage offers a real sense of wilderness, with far-reaching vistas over the Soča Valley and the heart of the Julian Alps. By late afternoon we arrive at the welcoming Dom na Komni hut, perched high above Lake Bohinj, where we spend the night surrounded by mountain silence.
Day 4
Komna Plateau - Bogatinsko seldo Pass - Triglav Lakes Hut (1,685 m)
Distance: 13 km | Ascent: +662m | Descent: -473m
From Dom na Komni hut, the trail climbs steadily towards the Bogatinsko sedlo pass (2,007 m), where sweeping panoramas open across the Soča Valley to the west and deep into the Julian Alps to the east. Crossing this high saddle feels like stepping further into the wilderness of Triglav National Park. From here we descend into the magical Valley of the Triglav Lakes, a chain of jewel-like alpine lakes cradled between limestone ridges and spruce forests. By evening we arrive at the beautifully situated Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih hut, our base for the night in the heart of the “Seven Lakes Valley.”
Day 5
Seven Lakes Valley - Velo Polje Plateau - Vodnikov dom (1,817 m)
Distance: 12 km | Ascent: +763m | Descent: -618m
We leave the peaceful Valley of the Triglav Lakes and begin a steady climb through high alpine pastures and rocky terrain. The trail gradually rises above the tree line, with ever-expanding views of Triglav’s mighty southern faces. Crossing open limestone slopes and meadows dotted with wildflowers, we make our way to the beautifully situated Vodnikov dom na Velem polju hut (1,817 m). Here, on a broad plateau beneath Triglav itself, the evening light paints the peaks in golden hues — a perfect setting to rest before continuing deeper into the high Julian Alps.
Day 6
From the High Plateau to the Shores of Lake Bohinj
Distance: 15 km | Ascent: +177m | Descent: -1479m
Our final day begins high on the Velo Polje plateau, with morning views of Triglav towering above. From here, the trail winds steadily down through alpine pastures and into cool beech forests, gradually returning us to the valley. As the peaks recede behind us, we descend all the way to the village of Stara Fužina, where a refreshing swim in Lake Bohinj provides the perfect reward. It’s a fitting end to our journey — from the heights of the Julian Alps back to the tranquil waters of Slovenia’s most beautiful lake.
Day 7
Return to Venice
After breakfast, we transfer back to Venice Airports, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Slovenia’s rugged beauty.
Drop-off: Venice Airports
What to expect
This is a true hut-to-hut adventure in the Julian Alps — rewarding, unforgettable, and at times challenging. To make the most of it, it’s important to know what the journey involves:
Fitness & experience – This trek covers around 55 km with significant ascents and descents. Prior hiking experience is essential, and we strongly recommend training beforehand to ensure you’re comfortable with full days on mountain trails.
Carrying your pack – You’ll need to carry your own backpack throughout the trek. With clothing, toiletries, water, and a few extras, most bags weigh around 12 kg.
Varied terrain – Expect a mix of well-marked mountain paths, rocky trails, and sections of boulder fields. Good footwear and preparation are key.
Mountain huts – Each hut is unique. Some offer small rooms for 2–4 people, while others are more traditional with larger dormitory-style bunks. All are warm, welcoming, and part of the authentic alpine experience.
Food on the trail – Mountain cuisine is hearty and filling. Vegetarians are well catered for, but please note that vegan options cannot always be guaranteed in every hut.
This trek is designed for people who love the outdoors and are ready for a genuine alpine journey — a mix of comfort and simplicity, challenge and reward. With the right preparation, the Julian Alps will more than repay your effort
