Breithorn Trekking Adventure in the Swiss Alps

Last Year’s Breithorn Adventure: A Journey to the Top of the Swiss Alps

The Breithorn trek had long been on our bucket list, and in July, five of us finally made the journey to the Swiss Alps to tackle this iconic peak. Having trekked through nearly every corner of the Alps, this was the final frontier for us — and it did not disappoint.

The Starting Point: Zermatt

Our adventure began in the charming, car-free town of Zermatt, nestled in the shadow of the Matterhorn. Zermatt was everything we expected and more: picturesque streets, stunning views, and the kind of tranquility you rarely find. It would have been easy to spend days there, but Breithorn was calling.

From Zermatt, we took the Klein Matterhorn cable car — an exhilarating ride that takes you on a series of cable cars, each offering unbelievable, jaw-dropping views of the Matterhorn. As we climbed higher, we reached an altitude of 3883 meters, higher than even the Aiguille du Midi in France, making it the highest cable car station in Europe.

Crampons and Rope: The Summit Push

We started the summit push, the snow was hard underfoot. We geared up, putting on our crampons and roping up, with four of us linked together for safety. The trail wound upwards in a zig-zagging pattern, and with each step, the views became more incredible. The crisp mountain air, the crunch of ice underfoot, and the panorama of the Swiss and French Alps made every moment breathtaking.

Despite the altitude and the physical challenge, we pressed on, climbing steadily towards the summit. The final approach was exhilarating, and when we reached the summit of Breithorn at 4164 meters, the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. The views were simply unmatched — 360-degree vistas of some of the highest peaks in Europe.

Celebration in Zermatt

After our descent, still buzzing from the achievement, we returned to Zermatt for a well-deserved dinner. There’s something special about sharing a meal after a day of high adventure, and it was the perfect end to our journey. The Swiss Alps had once again shown us their beauty and power, and Breithorn had cemented itself as one of our all-time favorite climbs.
