Lagom Walking Club

A relaxed week of guided walking for UK walking clubs in the Catalan Pyrenees.”

Lagom Walking Club is about discovering the quieter side of the Catalan Pyrenees — wide valleys, high viewpoints, historic villages, and uncrowded trails that feel far removed from the busier mountain regions of Europe. This is a part of the Pyrenees that remains largely untouristed, where walking days are shaped by scenery, space, and a slower pace.

We work directly with UK walking clubs who want to take their group beyond the UK, offering a relaxed and well-supported introduction to walking abroad. Each trip is designed specifically for the abilities, interests, and pace of the group, ensuring days that feel rewarding without being rushed or overly demanding.

The programme outlined below gives a sense of the type of walking we offer — scenic ridge walks, high-lake trails, cultural valleys, and dramatic gorges — but every itinerary can be adapted. Distances, ascent, rest days, and cultural elements are all tailored to suit the group, creating a holiday that feels balanced, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone.

All walks are led by a fully qualified UIMLA International Mountain Leader, with careful planning, local knowledge, and thoughtful logistics throughout. Our role is to remove complexity, provide reassurance, and allow walking clubs to focus on what they do best: enjoying great days out together in exceptional landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in the Catalan Pyrenees

On arrival at Barcelona Airport, we’ll meet the group and transfer north into the Catalan Pyrenees. As we leave the coast behind, the landscape gradually opens into wide valleys and rolling foothills, setting the tone for the week ahead.

Once settled into our accommodation, there’s time to unwind, stretch the legs locally, and enjoy a relaxed first evening together.

Day 2

Montsec d’Ares Ridge Walk

Focus: Panoramic ridge walking | Elevation gain: ~200 m | Distance: ~8 km

We begin the walking programme with a spectacular but gentle ridge walk on Montsec d’Ares. A scenic drive brings us close to the summit, allowing us to enjoy expansive views with minimal ascent.

Walking along the broad crest, the Pyrenees stretch out in front of us, while far below, griffon vultures circle on rising thermals. It’s also common to see paragliders launching from the cliffs beneath our feet. The terrain is open and easy-going, making this an ideal introduction to walking in the region.

Day 3

Vall de Boí & Romanesque Churches

Focus: Cultural walking | Elevation gain: ~70 m | Distance: ~10 km

Today combines gentle walking with cultural discovery in the Vall de Boí, home to a remarkable collection of UNESCO-protected Romanesque churches.

We take a 4×4 taxi up the valley before walking gradually downhill, passing through meadows and villages as the high mountains rise above us. The route is unhurried and scenic, with time to pause at several of the historic churches and enjoy the contrast between human history and the surrounding peaks.

Day 4

Rest Day – Tremp or Terradets

Focus: Rest & choice | Walking: Optional

A well-earned rest day, with options to suit the group. Some may prefer a slow morning exploring the cafés, shops, and riverside walks of Tremp.

Alternatively, we can transfer the group late morning to Terradets, where there’s time to sit by the lake with food and drink, enjoying views across the water. For those who feel like stretching their legs, an optional lakeside walk leads to a viewpoint with distant views towards the peaks of Aigüestortes National Park.

Day 5

Sant Maurici & High Lakes

Focus: Alpine lakes | Elevation gain: ~400 m | Distance: ~7 km

A classic Pyrenean day. From the mountain village of Espot, we take a 4×4 taxi up to the shores of Sant Maurici Lake.

From here, we walk along the lake and continue gently uphill past waterfalls to a second high lake, where we stop for a packed lunch. At over 2,000 metres, the views feel distinctly alpine, with jagged summits rising close around us. Despite the dramatic setting, the route remains approachable and steady.

Day 6

Congost de Mont-rebei Gorge

Focus: Dramatic scenery | Elevation gain: 100 | Distance: 8km

Today’s walk takes us into the spectacular Congost de Mont-rebei, one of the most striking natural landscapes in the region.

We follow the carved path into the gorge, where vertical limestone walls rise high above the turquoise river below. The walking is steady and scenic rather than strenuous, with plenty of time to enjoy the setting. After a packed lunch in the gorge, we return the same way and head back to our accommodation.

Day 7

Return to Barcelona

After breakfast, we’ll transfer the group back to Barcelona Airport for onward travel, bringing the Lagom Walking Club week in the Catalan Pyrenees to a close.
